Teen Mental Health: Improving, but Still Experts Are Still Concerned...

The Hidden Risks of Sports Betting: Recognizing theSigns and Finding Help

Sports betting has become increasingly accessible through online platforms and mobile

apps. While it may seem like harmless entertainment, it can develop into problem

gambling, affecting mental health, finances, relationships, and daily responsibilities.

According to the Lindner Center of Hope, recognizing warning signs early and seeking

support can help prevent further harm.

Warning Signs to Watch For

● Behavioral changes: Betting more than intended, spending excessive time

gambling, or continuing to bet to recover previous losses.

● Emotional changes: Feeling anxious, irritable, guilty, or ashamed about gambling,

or using betting to cope with stress or sadness.

● Financial and relationship concerns: Hiding losses, borrowing money to gamble,

or experiencing conflict with family and friends.

How Can Sports Betting Affect Mental Health?

Problem gambling can contribute to stress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of

hopelessness. Financial difficulties and secrecy can make these challenges worse and

leave individuals feeling isolated. Gambling problems are not simply a matter of

willpower, and support is available.

When Should Someone Seek Help?

Consider reaching out for support if gambling feels difficult to control, money is being

spent beyond one's means, or betting is affecting relationships, responsibilities, or

emotional well-being. Helpful steps include limiting access to betting apps, identifying

triggers, finding healthy activities, and seeking professional support.

Treatment options may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational

interviewing, and peer support groups such as Gamblers Anonymous. Friends and

family can help by expressing concern without judgment, encouraging professional

support, and setting healthy boundaries.

Remember: Help Is Available

If you or someone you know is struggling with sports betting, reaching out is a positive

first step. Talking with a trusted adult, school counselor, mental health professional, or

support service can help connect you with appropriate resources.
